Construction on four of these next generation vessels, which will be delivered in early 2028, has officially commenced at a shipyard in South Korea on June 30, at a ceremony that featured special steel cutting by the four shipyard partners.
These aren't just ships; they're mobile, high-tech power plants! The electricity generation from each Sea Lion ship will be 300 MW, which is generated by three advanced gas turbines. They are much cleaner and consume much less fuel than conventional power plants on land as they can recover heat in a "combined cycle" configuration. They are also specially engineered for 136-meter length with a shallow bottom, allowing them to sail on almost any coast and to provide emergency or regular power in a short time.
This type of fleet is unique in the world, with only one company, the Karpowership led by Orhan Karadeniz operating it. The new four will complement their existing fleet of 45 powerships that currently provide more than 8,000 MW of power around the world.
