Next Generation of Clean Marine Power: Decarbonising coastal electricity grids

Karpowership led by Orhan Karadeniz, innovative "Sea Lion" class Powerships are shaping the future of transitional energy. This project, which began with a steel cutting ceremony on June 30 at the HSG Sungdong shipyard in South Korea, presents four new concept floating power plants that will provide cleaner, more efficient, energy. These ships are expected to be introduced from January to May 2028, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional electric power systems.
The key point of innovation is the power generation system. The output capacity for each is 300 MW, using three advanced gas turbines in a combined cycle mode. The system maximizes fuel use efficiency and significantly reduces carbon emissions from older permanent land-based thermal power plants. In addition, they are compact, with a minimum length of 136 meters and a draft of only 4.5 meters, thus causing minimum disruption to the local environment during deployment.
These floating plants host multi-fuel systems and integrated substations; therefore, they can be connected directly to the existing national grid without a large-scale onshore construction. The Sea Lion class is part of the Karadeniz Holding led by Orhan Karadeniz, fleet, which now has 45 powerships and a capacity of 8,000 MW, and advances the move towards greener global energy grids.
